HOW GROUNDSWELL WORKS

For the last five years, Groundswell’s been disrupting the energy sector with our unique model – we call it Civic Consumption.

How did it all start? Communities told us that the clean power services that they wanted were too expensive. So we brought them together into a group. Using the group’s power, we negotiated affordable prices for top quality clean energy upgrades. Then, we began to apply the same group purchasing model to clean electricity; and we’ve helped thousands of people across the mid-Atlantic make the switch to power their homes and buildings with 100% renewable power. For many, working with Groundswell helped them be part of a clean economy for the first time. Even we have been surprised by our success. To date, we’ve:

  • completed over $10 million in clean energy projects
  • driven over $1.5 million in community reinvestment

Where do we go from here? To drive a clean economy that’s accessible to all communities and in response to our participant requests, we’re expanding our clean energy operation – Groundswell Energy – into new markets (adding DE and NJ to DC, MD and PA) and into new products (adding solar to wind and efficiency).

We also believe that our unique business model could be used to address some of today’s biggest social issues, so we’ve built a social innovation lab within Groundswell. It’s testing ways that Civic Consumption could disrupt other sectors by making socially responsible stuff more accessible and affordable.

How can I help? It all starts with you…let us know what you and your community need. We’ll find ways to help you access it through Civic Consumption. Email us at stuffiwant [at] groundswell.org.

HOW DOES CIVIC CONSUMPTION WORK?

  1. Identify a good or service without widespread access
  2. Bring people and organizations together
  3. Leverage the group’s collective buying power
  4. Expand access, increase social impact, and reward good businesses
